Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Assessments

S.A.P. Alcohol & Drug Assessments

Responding to the needs of our community, Impact Education Center now offers SAP, Department of Transportation (D.O.T.), Assessments to individuals within Travis County and surrounding areas.

What is a S.A.P.?

  • A Substance Abuse Professional (S.A.P.) is a person who evaluates Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) employees, who have been found to be in violation of D.O.T.'s Drug and Alcohol Program Rule & Regulations.
  • Acting as a neutral party, the S.A.P. is an advocate for neither the employer nor the employee. The S.A.P.'s function is to ensures the public's safety, by guiding the employee through the mandatory return-to-duty process, for safety-sensitive jobs
  • The S.A.P. conducts initial face-to-face assessment/evaluation, determines level of care, and refers the employee to available services and resources
  • Based on the initial assessment/evaluation, the S.A.P. recommends education, follow-up testing, treatment, and/or aftercare, serving as a crucial step before an employee can resume safety-sensitive work
  • The S.A.P. performs follow-up evaluations for compliance and develops post-return-to-duty monitoring plans

Alcohol and Drug Assessments

  • The purpose of an assessment is to identify service needs and to determine if the individual has a substance use disorder or chemical dependency problem.
  • The assessments consist of a 45 to 60-minute interview with a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (L.C.D.C.), who meets the requirements of RULE §448.803, is currently certified, and in good standing in the State of Texas.
  • Upon completion of the interview, and based on the results of the assessment, recommendations are made for treatment, education, and/or support groups.
  • An assessment recommendation letter is then provided to the client’s referral source (attorney/probation officer/etc.) within one (1) to three (3) business days of the appointment.
